Chapel · Est. 1877 · Oxnard, California
The original Santa Clara Chapel in Oxnard was built in the late 1870s, with its first Mass celebrated on September 25, 1877. Local farmers constructed a 25-by-50-foot redwood chapel in the small township of New Jerusalem, along the south side of the Santa Clara River. The first Mass in that chapel was celebrated on September 25, 1877, by Rev. Juan Comapla. In the mid-1950's the Chapel was moved near the 101 freeway off Rose Avenue in Oxnard.
